Davide Roveda: Come ti è venuta l’idea di girare “Be My Cat”?
Adrian Tofei: “Allora, prima di Be My Cat, ho condotto uno show chiamato “The Monster”, che parlava di un ragazzo ossessionato da un’attrice rumena, che aveva dei problemi con il gatto di sua sorella. Il successo di quello show, unito alla mia viscerale passione per i film, mi ha portato a lavorare su questa pellicola.

D.R.: Anne Hathaway è a conoscenza del film?
Adrian Tofei: “Non lo so. Suppongo che ne abbia sentito parlare, ma non ho idea se lei l’abbia guardato oppure no.”
D.R.: Sappiamo che stai lavorando a qualcosa di nuovo. Cosa tratterà la tua prossima pellicola?
Adrian Tofei: “Si chiama We Put the World to Sleep ed è un film apocalittico su tre amici idealisti, delusi dal mondo che uniscono le forze per intraprendere una missione per portare tutto a termine. Nel cast ci saranno Erisse Peterson, mia moglie Duru Yücel Ţofei e me stesso. Attualmente sto cercando ancora dei fondi per realizzarlo: https://weputtheworldtosleep.com/invest”
D.R.: Puoi anticiparci altri piani per il futuro?
Adrian Tofei:”Vorrei portare il mio prossimo film, We Put the World to Sleep, ai vari festival come Cannes, al Sundance, a Venezia, a Toronto, a Berlino, al SXSW, a Tribeca, a Telluride, assicurandomi un grande distributore che possa portare il mio lavoro nei vari eventi e nei cinema di tutto il mondo. Mi piacerebbe anche ottenere una distribuzione limitata da parte di Netflix.
In qualità di attore invece, mi piacerebbe prendere parte ai film di altri registi. Non vorrei sempre e solo recitare nei miei. Ad esempio, penso che sarei molto bravo ad interpretare uno dei tanti strani personaggi di American Horror Story.”
D.R.: Quale regista ti ha influenzato di più? Quali sono i tuoi preferiti?
Adrian Tofei: “I registi che mi hanno impressionato e influenzato maggiormente sono Stanley Kubrick e Michael Moore. Questa invece è la lista di film che mi hanno colpito e segnato di più. Ma non è ancora completa.”
D.R.: Secondo te come dev’essere un film horror?
Adrian Tofei: “Hmm… ad essere sincero… non lo so… il genere horror è così soggettivo…”
D.R.: Quanto c’è di vero in Be My Cat?
Adrian Tofei: “Ad eccezione di alcuni piccoli dettagli, nulla nel film è reale (ah ah)! Mi sono dato molto da fare per ottenere delle sincere interpretazioni, improvvisando e ricreando momenti che potessero sembrare reali.”

Davide Roveda: How did you get the idea for the filming of “Be My Cat”?
Adrian Tofei: “Well, before “Be My Cat” I did a one-man-show called “The Monster”, about a guy obsessed with a Romanian actress, who also had some problems with his sister’s cat. The success of that show combined with my lifelong passion for film and inspired me to start working on the movie.
And about the filmmaking method – I was inspired by a connection I made between Ion Cojar’s acting method (which I studied in college) and the found footage concept. I talked more about this in my Found Footage Manifesto – https://adriantofei.com/the-found-footage-manifesto“
D.R.: Has Anne Hathaway seen the movie yet?
Adrian Tofei: “I don’t know. I suppose she heard about it, but I have no idea if she watched it or not.”
D.R.: What will the next movie be about?
Adrian Tofei: “It’s called “We Put the World to Sleep” and it’s an apocalyptic feature film about three idealistic friends disappointed with the world who join forces and embark on a mission to bring everything to an end. Starring Erisse Peterson, my wife Duru Yücel Țofei and me. I’m now looking for investors to complete the budget – https://weputtheworldtosleep.com/invest“
D.R.: What are your plans for the future?
Adrian Tofei: “To reach at least one top international film festival with “We Put the World to Sleep” (like Cannes, Sundance, Venice, Toronto, Berlin, SXSW, Tribeca, Telluride), secure a top distributor, then travel the festival circuit and either see the movie released in theaters worldwide, or get a limited release followed by Netflix.
And as an actor, I would love to get parts in other directors’ films as well. I don’t wanna always play in my own movies only. For example, I think I’d be very good and I’d love to play a character in American Horror Story.”
D.R.: Which directors do you think influenced you the most? Which ones are your favorites?
Adrian Tofei: “If we’re talking in general, the directors that impressed and influenced me the most are Stanley Kubrick and Michael Moore. D.R.: What are the main features a horror movie should always include?
Adrian Tofei: “Hmm… to be honest… I don’t know… the horror genre is so subjective…”
D.R.: How much of the story in “Be My Cat” is in fact real?
Adrian Tofei:”With the exception of some small details, nothing is real, (ha ha)! I just worked a lot on preparing all the circumstances that would lead during improvisations to authentic moments that look real.”
